In the Appalachian Mountain Range lies the Allegheny Mountains. One of these mountains is a ridge called Backbone Mountain. The summit of this ridge is the highest point in Maryland. The point was names for Captain Charles E Hoye.
Access is by foot on the Maryland High Point Trail. Park along Route 219 in West Virginia at N 39 14.720 W 79 29.500. The trail is about a mile, with 600 feet elevation change. The trail is in Monongahela National Forest and Western Pocahontas properties. Access is permitted.
