Kingsford Smith Airport is located south of the city centre on Botany Bay. It is named after Australia's pioneer aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who was the first to pilot a plane across the Pacific Ocean.
It is the world's oldest continually operated commercial airport, and the busiest commercial airport in Australia, handling in excess of 26 million passengers per year. Paradoxically, it is also the smallest international airport in Australia. The most recent runway (34R-16L) was constructed from reclaimed land.
