The former copper mine is located at Swainsley Wood near Ecton in the Manifold Valley.
Deep within Ecton Hill there are various mines which collectively make up the Ecton Copper Mines. Mining on Ecton Hill has gone on since Bronze Age times. There are about 70 mine workings scattered over the hill, including 40-50 vertical shafts, some over 90m deep, others shallow or grassed over. The mines include Apes Tor, Salt's, Dutchman's, Clayton, Deep Ecton, Chadwick, Bag, Dale, Waterbank and
Swainsley. The whole hill and the underground workings are now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, SSSI. There is now the Ecton Mine Educational Trust and the Ecton Hill Study Field Association.
