The costume refers to the history of Ganshoren and is inspired by the coat of arms of the municipality. “We recognize the figure of Saint Martin, the young Roman soldier who converted to Christianity. One winter's day he drew his sword and cut his cloak in half to give to a naked bum. Referring to this humanistic gesture, Manneken-Pis wears a sword and a divisible red and yellow cape, inspired by the municipal colors,” said Magali Cornelissen, alderman of French culture. Her colleague-alderman Marina Dehing-van den Broeck, alderman of Dutch Culture, joins her. “Two other local elements have also been incorporated into the costume, namely the goose and the swamp. Which recall the name Ganshoren, which means goose pond, with 'goose' referring to the farm animal, and 'hear' to swamp or wetland. The fauna and flora of the Ganshoren swamp are embroidered on the trousers and jacket, both in a green-brown color. The goose, a symbol of prudence and intelligence, is worn as a pendant and adorns the hat with its white feathers.
Collaboration
Mayor Pierre Kompany praised the great collaboration between the various artists, crafts and citizens for the realization of the costume: “For this original creation, full of references to the history of the municipality, the two cultural services managed to bring in a team of people from Ganshore and Brussels residents. , with golden fingers, together”, it sounds proud.
