" Je moet het even weten, maar de KPN winkel aan de Gedempte Gracht in Zaandam is gevestigd in de voormalige Zaanse synagoge. Deze wordt langzaam maar zeker in oude luister hersteld. 15 februari – in dezelfde maand als waarin in 1865 de synagoge officieel werd ingewijd - wordt de eerste fase van het project afgesloten. Via een online filmpje openen de voorzitter van de Stichting Vrienden van de Zaanse Synagoge, Robert Linnekamp en secretaris/penningmeester Felix Beekman, KPN en de Zaanse wethouder monumenten en erfgoed Natasja Groothuismink het deels gerestaureerde pand en de bijbehorende tentoonstelling. Vrij te bezoeken voor klanten van KPN en belangstellende voorbijgangers wanneer de lockdown voorbij is.
Zo mooi als het was...
In 1942 werd de synagoge onteigend door de Nazi's. Na een moeizame periode met een veel kleinere joodse gemeenschap werd het gebouw in 1974 verkocht. Op de plek van de KPN winkel, werd tot 1960 gebeden en gezongen. Met de restauratie van de galerij en het zichtbaar maken van de fraaie houten kapconstructie hoef je maar omhoog te kijken om de sfeer van de oude synagoge te beleven. Daar zie je ook afbeeldingen van voorwerpen van de voormalige synagoge. Bijvoorbeeld een exacte kopie van de originele Thora rollen in een prachtige Thora mantel met siertorens. Voor de bezoeker is er een gratis boekje 'Zo mooi als het was..' met meer informatie over het gebouw en de geschiedenis van de Zaanse Joodse gemeenschap.
KPN in de synagoge
‘KPN heeft, binnen de mogelijkheden van hun winkel, meegewerkt aan de wens om de synagoge zo veel als mogelijk ‘in oude luister te herstellen’. Twee werelden moesten elkaar ontmoeten, een commerciële functie en een monumentale gebedsfunctie. Daar wil ik KPN, maar ook Stichting Vrienden van de Zaanse Synagoge voor bedanken’, aldus wethouder Groothuismink. Ook de Zaanse gemeenteraad heeft regelmatig aandacht gevraagd voor de synagoge.
De kosten voor de werkzaamheden en het herstel worden volledig door KPN gedragen, vanuit de gemeente is er een subsidie beschikbaar gesteld voor het kleur historisch onderzoek en de expositie. Ook de Stichting Maatschappelijke Ondersteuning Zaanstreek Waterland heeft een financiële bijdrage geleverd."

In 1942 the synagogue was expropriated by the Nazis. After a difficult period with a much smaller Jewish community, the building was sold in 1974. Until 1960, prayers and singing took place on the site of the KPN store. With the restoration of the gallery and the visualization of the beautiful wooden roof construction, you only have to look up to experience the atmosphere of the old synagogue. There you will also see images of objects from the former synagogue. For example, an exact copy of the original Torah scrolls in a beautiful Torah mantle with ornamental towers. For the visitor there is a free booklet 'As beautiful as it was..' with more information about the building and the history of the Zaan Jewish community.
KPN in the synagogue
KPN has, within the possibilities of their shop, cooperated with the wish to 'restore the synagogue to its former glory' as much as possible. Two worlds had to meet, a commercial function and a monumental prayer function. I would like to thank KPN, but also the Friends of the Zaanse Synagogue Foundation for that," said Alderman Groothuismink. The Zaan city council has also regularly drawn attention to the synagogue.
The costs for the work and the repair are fully borne by KPN, a subsidy has been made available from the municipality for the color historical research and the exhibition. The Foundation for Social Support Zaanstreek Waterland has also made a financial contribution."
