The Carlskrona-Wexiö railway was inaugurated in 1874. The idea of joining the new railway with the naval dockyard's track system emerged soon thereafter.
Until then, heavy shipments were unloaded on the Skeppsbro dock railway track and then transported by sea or land to the naval shipyard, which was a time-consuming and demanding task.
The construction of the tunnel kicked-off in 1885 under the supervision of the renowned engineer C.J. Jehander.
It took almost two years to complete the 1.136 meter-long track, including the 56 meter-long tunnel beneath Klockstapeln (the Clock Tower) and the 225 meter-long tunnel beneath Stortorget. (the square).
The tunnel was inaugurated in 1889 by Oscar II. For many years, the railway tunnel played an important role in the transportation of goods to the naval shipyard, being periodically used also for passenger traffic.
The railway tunnel was last trafficked in 1990.
