Castel Nuovo was originally built between 1279 and 1282 by King Charles I of Anjou. Naples was subsequently conquered by Spain under Alfonso I of Aragon in 1442. He rebuilt the fortress to it's present appearance. Aragon monarchs ruled Naples from 1442 until 1501 and again in 1504. Following Alfonso I, Naples was ruled by Ferdinand I, Alfonso II, Ferdinand II, Frederick I until 1501 and Ferdinand III in 1504.
At the top of the arch, as you approach it from the south to enter the Castel Nuovo, is the coat of arms of Naples under the Aragonese monarchs. It is adapted from the coat of arms of King Ferdinand I. (
