Dutchman Creek on the right flows into the Cache River on the left. Both are muddy streams. After a heavy rainfall, one or the other will be thickly ladened with heavy silt, and you can tell which one had the most rain—and disturbance upstream by the different colors of the water. Sometimes the Cache is muddier; other times, it is Dutchman Creek. The silt comes from bank erosion and runoff associated with various human activites upstream, such as agricuture and construction. Excessive silt reduces light penetration and water quality, which is detrimental to life in the river, including fish, mussels and invertebrates, and lowers the overall recreational value and aesthetic beauty of the Cache.
