De sporttribune van het in 1919 aangelegde Gemeentelijk Sportpark aan de Soestdijkerstraatweg is de oudste houten sporttribune van Nederland. Directeur Publieke Werken Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) ontwierp de tribune in 1919 in Amsterdamse Schoolstijl. De tribune werd in 1991 aangewezen als Rijksmonument.

Dudok ontwierp een langwerpige sporttribune met een lengte van bijna 90 meter. Dudok plaatste de tribune zo, dat de monumentale voorzijde vanaf de openbare weg uit de stad goed zichtbaar was. De symmetrische opzet van de tribune zorgde voor een monumentaal effect. De hoofdtribune kreeg een stenen onderbouw met een houten bovenbouw in de kleuren wit, groen en oranje. De tribune zou 500 overdekte en 600 onoverdekte zitplaatsen hebben. In het midden was een buffet gepland, met daarboven ruimte voor een orkestje. De tribune heeft vele Amsterdamse School-elementen zoals de fraai geornamenteerde toegang, de gekartelde dakrand en de uitgewerkte raamlijsten. Maar de strakke overzichtelijke vormgeving en de heldere kleuren zijn al een vooraankondiging van de bouwstijl die Dudok in de twintiger jaren zou hanteren. De hoge vlaggenmasten geven de tribune een feestelijke uitstraling.

Al snel na ingebruikname werd er kritiek geuit op het ontwerp. De plaatsing van de tribune betekende dat de toeschouwers tegen de zon in moesten kijken. Ook de regen speelde de toeschouwers vaak parten. In 1923 werden daarom de 600 onoverdekte plaatsen alsnog overdekt. Aanvankelijk waren er geen warmwaterdouches, geen bestuurskamer en de kleedkamer van de scheidsrechter lag bij de hoofdingang zodat deze zich steeds een weg door het publiek moest banen. In 1925 breidde Dudok het sportpark uit met een directeursgebouwtje met kleedkamers en een vergaderlokaal.

In 1928 organiseerde Nederland de Olympische Spelen, waarbij de gemeente Hilversum erin was geslaagd de ruiterspelen te laten plaatsvinden in het Gemeentelijk Sportpark. Dudoks sporttribune gold daarbij als Olympische Tribune. Leuk weetje: bij deze ruiterspelen op het Hilversumse Sportpark wist Nederland twee gouden en één bronzen medaille te winnen.

The sports grandstand of the Municipal Sports Park on the Soestdijkerstraatweg, which was built in 1919, is the oldest wooden sports grandstand in the Netherlands. Director of Public Works Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) designed the grandstand in 1919 in the Amsterdam School style. The grandstand was designated a National Monument in 1991.

Dudok designed an elongated sports stand with a length of almost 90 meters. Dudok placed the grandstand in such a way that the monumental front was clearly visible from the public road from the city. The symmetrical layout of the grandstand created a monumental effect. The main stand has a stone substructure with a wooden superstructure in the colors white, green and orange. The grandstand would have 500 covered and 600 uncovered seats. A buffet was planned in the middle, with space for an orchestra above it. The design was criticized soon after commissioning. The placement of the grandstand meant that spectators had to face the sun. The rain also often played tricks on the spectators. In 1923, therefore, the 600 uncovered places were covered after all. Initially, there were no hot water showers, no boardroom and the referee's locker room was near the main entrance so he had to push his way through the crowd. In 1925 Dudok expanded the sports park with a director's building with changing rooms and a meeting room.

In 1928 the Netherlands organized the Olympic Games, in which the municipality of Hilversum had succeeded in having the equestrian games take place in the Municipal Sports Park. Dudok's sports grandstand served as the Olympic Tribune. Fun fact: at these equestrian games at the Hilversumse Sportpark, the Netherlands won two gold and one bronze medal.
