Panel 1 Text:
Floods from two different sources came through this valley during the last Ice Age.

The largest floods came from glacial Lake Missoula. Then an extension of ice thousands of feet thick blocked the Columbia River. The river backed up to create glacial Lake Columbia, a new source for massive flooding.

Panel 2 Text:
Lake Missoula Floods
Initially, floods from glacial Lake Missoula raced through this valley. When a lobe of ice from the continental ice sheet extended south, it blocked the Columbia River. Known as the "Okanogan Lobe," it shielded this valley from the direct impact of later floods from Labe Missoula.

The Lake Columbia Flood
Near the end of the last Ice Age, the Okanogan Lobe of ice blocked the Columbia River northeast of here. The river backed up, creating 1,500-food deep glacial Lake Columbia. Eventually, Lake Columbia broke though its ice dam, sending a giant flood down this valley.
