"Founded according to legend by Charlemagne at the end of the 8th century, the Benedictine abbey of Brantôme includes an abbey church, a cloister gallery, an 11th century Romanesque bell tower built on a rock overhang and a monastic building housing the Fernand Desmoulin Museum and showrooms.

Thus, from the installation of the monks in the 6th century, the cliff provided them with troglodyte shelters and the wood on site, material necessary for the construction of a first monastery. It was consecrated by Charlemagne in 769 but it did not survive the Norman and Viking invasions. Gradually, the monks rebuilt the building, with a new bell tower. It has the particularity of being built directly on the rock as an extension of the building of the abbey.

From the 10th century, the abbey regained a certain prosperity, the fruits of which enabled the construction of the cathedral of Angoulême. The abbey during the 12th and 13th centuries continued its ascent by becoming an important stop on the pilgrimage to Compostela, before being ransacked again during the Hundred Years War. Brantôme was not spared and the troops of Raimond II de Montaut caused serious damage to the Abbey. The English, in 1404 masters in the place, restored it and made it a kind of fortified castle but the church and the cloister are destroyed and will not be rebuilt until the 15th century.

From 13 monks, the monastery grew to a community of 37 monks and with peace restored, the Abbey regained its former prosperity. Abbé Pierre de Bourdeille, better known as Brantôme, in charge of royal power, succeeded in saving the Abbey during the wars of religion. Then again it is the decline and in the 18th century the community has only 8 monks until the Revolution which closes the Abbey."

" Fondée selon la légende par Charlemagne à la fin du VIIIe siècle, l’abbaye bénédictine de Brantôme comprend une abbatiale, une galerie de cloître, un clocher roman du XIe siècle bâti sur un surplomb rocheux et un bâtiment monastique abritant le Musée Fernand Desmoulin et des salles d’exposition.

Ainsi dès l’installation des moines au VIe siècle, la falaise leur fournit des abris troglodytes et le bois sur place, matériau nécessaire à la construction d’ un premier monastère. Celui-ci fut consacré par Charlemagne en 769 mais il ne survivra pas aux invasions normandes et vikings. Petit à petit, les moines reconstruisent l’édifice, dotée d’un nouveau clocher. Il a la particularité d’être édifié directement sur le roc en prolongement du bâti de l’abbaye.

A partir du Xe siècle, l’abbaye retrouve une certaine prospérité dont les fruits permirent l’édification de la cathédrale d’Angoulême. L’abbaye pendant les XIIe et XIIIe siècle poursuit son ascension en devenant une étape importante sur le pèlerinage de Compostelle, avant d’être à nouveau saccagée pendant la guerre de cent ans. Brantôme ne fut pas épargnée et les troupes de Raimond II de Montaut causèrent de graves dommages à l’Abbaye. Les anglais, en 1404 maîtres en la place, la restaurèrent et en firent une sorte de château fortifié mais l’église et le cloître sont détruits et ne seront reconstruits qu’au XVe siècle.

De 13 religieux, le monastère passe à une communauté de 37 moines et la paix retrouvée, l’Abbaye regagne sa prospérité d’antan. L’abbé Pierre de Bourdeille, plus connu sous le nom de Brantôme, en charge du pouvoir royal,réussit à sauver l’Abbaye lors des guerres de religion. Puis de nouveau c’est le déclin et au XVIIIe siècle la communauté n’a plus que 8 religieux jusqu’à la Révolution qui ferme l’Abbaye."
