The suburb of Barnhill lies on the eastern side of Broughty Ferry, a town lying to the east of the Scottish city of Dundee, overlooking the Tay estuary to the south. An esplanade runs alongside the seafront from Broughty Castle to Barnhill and its towards the eastern end that the rock garden can be found.
Formed in 1955 on the site of a nine hole golf course between the esplanade and the East Coast railway line, the garden was formed by clearing an area of volcanic rock that had been the old shore line.
