Long Description:
While transporting an assault victim from Ottawa to Renfrew, Constable Swett received a radio message to be on the alert for a drunk driver from Arnprior heading east. While negotiating a curve to the left, Swett was confronted by an eastbound vehicle veering into the westbound lanes. Swett drove to the right but was struck on the north shoulder. Both vehicles burst into flames killing PC Swett, his passenger and the driver of the other car. The driver of the other car was the impaired driver about whom Swett had been warned.

Ontario has permitted bridges and other highway structures to be dedicated in memory of fallen police officers since 2002. The Highway Memorial for Fallen Police Officers Act, 2002 is based on a private member’s bill introduced by Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci.
Since 2002, 27 provincial highway structures have been dedicated in honour of fallen police officers.
