A white marble stone statue of a 19th century firefighter marks the dedicated Firemen's Rest section of Sparkman Hillcrest Cemetery that has been reserved for the burials of former Dallas firefighters and their wives for over 125 years.
The firefighter is wearing a DFD hard helmet, and the fire-resistant uniform of the time, with a buckled jacket, pants, and high boots. He holds a 4-foot long metal hose nozzle, that comes with several handholds. This type of hose rig was common in the late 19th and early 20th century. The hose attached to the nozzle is behind him. The firefighter appears to be looking up to where his nozzle is pointed, as if caught in the act of fighting a fire.
Near the statue, several headstones of former Dallas Fire Department veterans and their wives are arranged.
Sparkman-Hillcrest cemetery dates from the 1850s, when a small pioneer cemetery on the Caruth family farm was expanded into the vast cemetery that still serves Dallas today. As far as I can tell, Firemen's Rest was in place by 1910.
