The Lancaster Post Office, constructed in 1938-9, is architecturally significant as an example of the federal architecture erected as part of the public works projects initiated by the United States government during the Great Depression. In addition to its architectural importance, the Lancaster Post Office is artistically significant in that it contains a well preserved mural executed in 1940 by Arthur Getz.

Lancaster's first post office was established about 1823. It maintained several addresses over the years and was located in town hall at the turn of the century. This location was authorized by Congress in 1931, but was not built until 1938-9. It replaced a garage and various small sheds and former carriage houses.

The Lancaster Post Office is one of seven post offices built between 1935 and 1942 that are virtually identical in design. Nearby Depew Post Office is one of those seven.
