Ottawa "All Shook up"
On 3 April 1957, Elvis Presley arrived in Ottawa
to play two concerts. Teenagers travelled from
Montreal, Maine, New-York and Vermont to see the
singer. One train from Montreal carried over 500
concert goers to the Capital. When Elvis stepped on
stage, the audience of over 9,000 was so loud it was
almost impossible to hear him sing. Fans were
in a frenzy of screaming, weeping and crying.
Elvis was the embodiment of the new music of
rock n' roll and scandalized many of the older
generation. The nuns of the Notre-Dame Convent
considered his suggestive moves immoral
and forbade their students from attending a
performance. Eight students were expelled
from the school, after going at a concert.

y presenter deux spectacles. Des jeunes sont venus
de Montréal, du Maine, de New York et du Vermont
pour le voir. Un train de Montréal transportait plus
de 9000 spectateurs vers la capitale. Quand Elvis s’est
présenté sur scène, la foule de 9000 spectateurs
l’acclamait si fort qu’il était pratiquement impossible
de l’entendre chanter. La foule en délire hurlait,
pleurait et applaudissait sans répit.
Elvis personnifiait la nouvelle musique du rock
“n” roll qui scandalisait bon nombre de personnes
de la génération précédente. Les soeurs du couvent
Notre-Dame, jugeant ses « déhanchements»
immoraux, interdirent à leurs élèves d’assister au
spectacle. Huit élèves furent expulsées de l’école
pour être allées au spectacle.
