Al opened this little breakfast restaurant in 1950 and ran the place until the mid 70's. It is now under different owners and the food is still great. I have eaten here twice, both time I had bacon and pancakes (and an egg the first time) with a cup of coffee, not a mug, but a cup. Both time I ordered 'bacon' not crispy bacon or well done bacon, just bacon because these folks do it right. There are a lot of extras they will be happy to add to your eggs or pancakes but I have been happy with plain and simple.
Al's is located a few blocks north of the University of Minnesota campus and has served a lot of meals to a lot of college students. The regulars put money on a little yellow book with their name on the front. Every time they get something to eat the cost of subtracted from the old total.
I had breakfast at Al's the Tuesday before I posted this Waymark. Halfway through my meal I guy came in, sat next to me and asked about his book. He said he had not been in for "a long time" but they found his book and let him know he had $17.00 to spend.
The Food Network has the episode American Cookin' at the web-address below, but it would not play when I tried. I did find the episode on Youtube at youtube.com/watch?v=7-4plACYssM, it starts at 11:02 into the video.
If you visit keep in mind that street parking is free until 8am.
