The Haukvik gene bank facility by the Vinjefjord is owned and operated by Haukvik Genbank AS on behalf of the Norwegian Environment Directorate. It is a gene bank for Norwegian wild salmon which was started 30 years ago. During that time, several known salmon strains have been preserved and re-established.
The gene bank has a capacity for holding about 12 salmon strains, and a production of about 1000 liters of roe (about 5,000,000 pieces) per year.
In 2021, most genetic material consists of salmon and trout that come from rivers that are infected with Gyrodactylus salaris.
