Porto-Vecchio owes its name of "city of salt" to the twenty years of the great expansion of the saltworks between 1795 and 1815 and to the fact that the saltworks of Porto-Vecchio are the only ones existing in Corsica since that time.

The saltworks of Porto-Vecchio

Located at the mouth of the "Fiume Stabiaccu", the salt marshes have earned Porto-Vecchio the title of "City of Salt".
Covering about ten hectares, they produce about 900 tons of salt per year, harvested in August-September.
If some think that they would have been founded by the Romans, the historian Fernand Ettori reminds us that the saltworks of Sant'Amanza, which existed before those of Porto-Vecchio, were destroyed by the Genoese for fear of smuggling.
This salt, so important for the conservation, constituting a great source of income, they preferred in fact to import it from Ibiza and to tax it at its unloading.
The salt works that can be seen today date back to 1795.
It was not until the Anglo-Corsican kingdom that Giovan Paolo Rocca Serra, a member of parliament sitting in Bastia, obtained permission for his brother Paolo Francisco to create a saltworks in Porto-Vecchio.
