This granite sculpture references Tacoma's place as the Western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. It is located in the heart of the University of Washington Tacoma campus. This campus was created using restored turn of the century warehouses that were served by a Northern Pacific rail line that ran through the alley between the buildings. The alley now exists as a pedestrian walkway with the tracks still running beside it as a reminder of the history of the campus.
The sculpture Terminus lies in a small courtyard just off of these railroad tracks. It is constructed of several hinged pieces of rough white granite and 1 piece carved to look like an open suitcase.
