"The coastal situation, dominated by cliffs about 60 meters high, the mountain systems and the rivers that flow through Valdés comprise an interesting geological heritage.
In an 1882 publication by Charles Barrois, a French geologist, he mentions and analyzes in his study "Recherches Sur les terrainsanciens des Asturies et de la Galice" (Research on the ancient lands of Asturias and Galicia) what he calls "Schistes de Luarca ”, later translated as Pizarras de Luarca. This denomination, in a broad sense, is used to this day.
The Pizarras de Luarca series is recognized, and receives the same name, in western Asturias, Lugo, Orense, León and Zamora. It is essentially made up of dark gray to black slate, with abundant pyrite, which originally correspond to a relatively deep marine sedimentary deposit. Integrating a medium quartzite member, its global thickness is close to 600 m in this area and it is dated as Middle Ordovician (approximately 470 million years)."
