John McKinlay was born in Scotland in 1819. He came to Australia 1836 and in 1861 led an expedition in search of Burke and Wills, but after hearing of their deaths decided to continue north until he reached the Gulf of Carpentaria. On his return he settled in Gawler where he died on 31 December 1872.
