For centuries it was the land that the different marquises owned for their enjoyment at the back of the Ferrera Palace ; but in the second half of the 20th century it was the objective of arduous negotiations between the city council and its owners in order to turn it into a public space that would finally be inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I on May 19, 1976.
It has four entrance doors and also a passage built to join it with the Municipal House of Culture since the park houses the old Avilesina Newspaper Library.
History
This property belonged to the Marquisate of Ferrera since the 15th century , although it was not until the middle of the 17th century with the construction of the palace when they adapted it in order to transform it into English-style gardens that would house the stables and also serve as a place for recreation for this illustrious Avilesina family. In addition, it also includes a French-style garden with several fountains in the area closest to the palace, planned at the request of the Marchioness to be able to walk quietly with her service nearby.
Its surface area is approximately 81,000 m² , so during the middle of the 20th century this enormous possession was completely abandoned by its owners due to the high costs of its maintenance, and the park became something similar to a virgin forest . 5 During the Spanish transition, the newly constituted Avilés town hall acquired the entire surface for 91 million pesetas , thus achieving the greatest social achievement in the history of the city by converting it into a space for public use.
The noble family then reserved ownership of the area closest to the palace, the French garden for their exclusive enjoyment again at the request of the Marchioness who had a special attachment to a specimen of red beech that was located on the border of the two gardens. Therefore, the original layout designed for the park had to be modified. Although finally during 1998 it was also sold and annexed to the English zone, being able to be visited at certain hours of the day.
Data of interest
It is equipped with abundant rest furniture, as well as signposted and technically equipped areas for sports exercise, consisting of a signposted running circuit that includes gymnastic equipment. At the same time, it also offers the visitor the possibility of listening to some Sundays concerts in the bandstand that houses or visiting the Municipal House of Culture .
During the bun festival , declared of National and International Tourist Interest, it is common to find the venue completely full of public celebrating the well-known Street Food that brings together different generations of Avilesinos in this wooded area, and in which it is usual to eat " pregnant buns "accompanied by cider . It should also be noted that sometimes there are art exhibitions around the park perimeter and you can enjoy the Wi-Fi network belonging to the town hall at no cost to the user.
It is also worth mentioning that the park has been used as a setting by the American filmmaker Woody Allen during the filming of his film Vicky Cristina Barcelona accompanied by Javier Bardem , Scarlett Johanson and Penélope Cruz .
