The Roman Catholic Cemetery St. Laurentius (until 1999 called the Roman Catholic Cemetery Crooswijk) is a Roman Catholic cemetery in Rotterdam, located on the Nieuwe Crooswijkseweg in the Rotterdam borough of Kralingen-Crooswijk, which is dedicated to Saint Laurentius of Rome.
rom 1827 the dead were no longer allowed to be buried in churches. As a result, the Rotterdam Roman Catholics no longer had their own cemeteries in Rotterdam. In 1864, the Diocese of Haarlem received permission from the Municipality of Rotterdam to turn the then Groenendaal country estate in Crooswijk into a Roman Catholic cemetery. The Groenendaal country estate was owned by the Tholen family, who bequeathed it to the diocese. On October 18, 1867, the first dead was buried here.
The design of the cemetery comes from architect H.J. van den Brink. He designed the cemetery as an Italianate walled area (campo sante), with a chapel in the center. This chapel was replaced in 1963 by a new chapel, the foundation of which soon gave rise to problems and this chapel was also demolished. The current chapel, dedicated to Saint Mary of the Angels, has been there since 2001. This modern chapel was designed by Francine Houben and architectural firm Mecanoo.[1] Along the outer rim is a Romanesque Revival arcade built with double crypts below. The current gatehouse, in neo-Gothic style, dates from 1936 and was designed by architect J.P.L. Hendriks.
