The Woodmen of the World are known today as WoodmenLife, a fraternal society that provides insurance to its members. Visitors to older cemeteries can frequently spot the marble tree trunk monuments that they placed at the graves of their members, although not every tree trunk monument out there was placed by the Woodmen of the World or the Woodmen Circle, one of their women's auxiliaries: It was common in the late 19th century to use a log to note that a person had died young, and many infants have such grave markers. Eventually, those tree trunk monuments became too expensive to produce, and headstones would be marked with a Woodmen emblem of some kind.

The Neighbors of Woodcraft were an offshoot of the Woodmen Circle. Delegates from nine western states voted to secede from the Woodmen Circle in 1897, and were initially known as the "Pacific Circle, Women of Woodcraft." At some point, they became the Neighbors of Woodcraft to accommodate both men and women, but in 2001, they returned to the fold and were taken back into the Woodmen of the World.

The inscription on Mr. Biddle's upright, gray granite headstone reads simply, "John M. Biddle" and "1873 -- 1929". That looks to be a Woodmen of the World emblem in the upper left corner, with the tools on and in front of a tree stump, while in the other corner is the Neighbors of Woodcraft emblem. It features a Dove of Peace with an olive branch, flying over a fallen tree, with "Neighbors of Woodcraft" directly above, and the organizational motto, "Courage Hope Remembrance" below.
