Cannenburgh Castle has a history dating back to the year 1365. In 1543 it came into the hands of Maarten van Rossum, a very influential person in Gelderland. He had the ruin restored in Renaissance style, hitherto unknown in Gelderland. Maarten van Rossum did not see that the castle was finished, he died in 1555. His successor, Hendrik van Isendoorn completed the construction. After the last family member of the van Isendoorn family had died in 1881 the entire contents were taken from the castle by the heirs and taken elsewhere. The castle was to be demolished but this did not take place. It was sold to Baron van Lynden. After WW II it was confiscated by the Dutch state. In 1951 it was sold for a symbolic amount to the Gelderse Kasteelen Stichting. Between 1975 and 1981 it was completely restored and refurbished with the help of donations. In 2006, part of the old contents could be bought back at an auction in Brussels.

On the large lawn in front of the castle is an antique sundial. This consists of a number of black steel rings on a base of carved sandstone. The steel ring on which you can read the time is painted light blue on the outside and white on the inside. In Roman script, the times are written in black letters on the white background. I'm not sure but it seems like the sundial and the pedestal don't belong together.
