SUSTRANS is an organisation that promotes the use of cycles as a green form of transport. A national network of cycle routes is being developed in conjunction with local councils. Wherever possible the routes avoid roads, but in some places have to share the road network.

As part of the millennium celebrations 1000 mileposts have been installed at various positions throughout the whole SUSTRANS network.

Sustrans commissioned four artists from the four countries of the United Kingdom to design cast iron ‘Millennium Mileposts’, but each design was spread throughout the network rather than being only installed in the country of birth of the artist.

This milepost design is titled "Tracks", designed by Belfast artist David Dudgeon. The main design on the post shows the tracks made in the landscape by cyclists. This is complemented by a piece of text exploring sensations and observations one makes whilst travelling through various environments.
DOWN A WANDERING PATH,
I HAVE TRAVELLED,
WHERE THE SETTING SUN
LIES UPON THE GROUND,
THE TRACKS ARE HARD AND DRY
SMOOTHENED WITH
THE WEATHER'S WEAR,
MY MIND DID MOVE
WITH THEM THAT HAD
BEFORE ME BEEN,
TRODDING DOWN THE GROUND
A TRACK FOR ME TO FOLLOW,
LEAVING MARKS FOR OTHERS
A SIGN FOR THEM TO FOLLOW.
