President's House Cucumber Magnolia
Magnolia acuminata
This cucumber magnolia was planted around 1865,
Pobably by William G. Waring, professor of horticulture,
as part of the original landscaping around the President's
house, now part of the Hintz Family Alumni Center.
Magnolia is the Latin botanical genus name derived from
Pierre Magnol, a French professor of botany who died in
1715. The species name, acuminata, means "with a sharp
point," and refers to the sharply tapering leaf tip. In the
spring, the tree produces large, bell-shaped yellow flowers
that give way in July and August to bright red cucumber-
shaped pods.
Magnolias are one of the oldest groups of flowering
plands, and in North America, the cucumber magnolia is
the northernmost species of the Magnolia genus.
