De Gruyter breidde haar keten van kruidenierswinkels in de beginjaren van de 20ste eeuw flink uit. In Arnhem bouwde Willem G. Welsing voor De Gruyter twee winkels. Een aan de Hommelseweg 8 in 1916 en tien jaar later een op de hoek van de Roggestraat en Beekstraat, aan het Land van de Markt.

In de winkel/woonhuis wist de architect de, toen hevig in de mode zijnde, art-nouveau stijl te combineren met de opkomende architectuurstroming ‘Zakelijkheid’. In het gehele ontwerp werd benadrukt dat het een hoekpand was. Het totale plaatje werd gesierd door een vijfhoekig torentje, met op elke hoek stadswapens afgebeeld. Het zijn de wapenschilden van de vijf steden waarin De Gruyter filialen had: Utrecht, Arnhem, Den Bosch, Nijmegen en Amsterdam. De schilden zijn uitgevoerd in de ‘heraldieke’ kleuren keel (rood), azuur (blauw), or (geel/goud), argent (wit/zilver) en sabel (zwart).

Samen met de nieuwbouw van de voormalige V&D en de Musis parkeergarage werd een nieuw winkelcomplex met daarboven drie appartementencomplexen (Thalia, Euterpe en Erato) gecreëerd. Dit rondom een binnenterrein waartoe een passage vanuit het Land van de Markt toegang zou geven. De creatie van Welsing werd verbouwd van winkel tot deze luxe entree. Die restauratie/transformatie werd intensief begeleid door het architectenbureau Rappange & Partners uit Amsterdam. De karakteristieke voorgevel bleef voor een belangrijk deel gespaard en kreeg zelfs wat meer allure door het gebruik van glas en lichte stenen. Op 24 augustus 2006 werden het Musiskwartier en de Gruyterpassage officieel voor het publiek geopend.

De Gruyter expanded its chain of grocery stores considerably in the early years of the 20th century. Willem G. Welsing built two stores for De Gruyter in Arnhem. One at Hommelseweg 8 in 1916 and ten years later one on the corner of Roggestraat and Beekstraat, on Land van de Markt.

In the shop/house, the architect was able to combine the Art Nouveau style, which was very fashionable at the time, with the emerging architectural movement 'Business'. It was emphasized throughout the design that it was a corner building. The overall picture was adorned by a pentagonal turret, with city arms depicted on each corner. They are the coats of arms of the five cities in which De Gruyter had branches: Utrecht, Arnhem, Den Bosch, Nijmegen and Amsterdam. The shields are made in the 'heraldic' colors keel (red), azure (blue), or (yellow/gold), argent (white/silver) and saber (black).

Together with the new construction of the former V&D and the Musis parking garage, a new shopping complex with three apartment complexes above it (Thalia, Euterpe and Erato) was created. This around an inner area to which a passage from the Land van de Markt would give access. Welsing's creation was converted from a shop to this luxurious entrance. This restoration/transformation was intensively supervised by the architectural firm Rappange & Partners from Amsterdam. The characteristic facade was largely spared and was even given more allure by the use of glass and light stones. On August 24, 2006, the Musiskwartier and the Gruyterpassage were officially opened to the public.
