Salinas is a seaside town and is the second most populated town in the council, behind its capital , Piedras Blancas , which is 2 km away .
The parish limits to the north with the Cantabrian Sea , to the east, with the councils of Gozón and Avilés ; to the south with that of Avilés ; and to the west, with the parish of Laspra .
It has one of the most extensive beaches in Asturias with more than 2500 meters long, being divided into two: the San Juan de Nieva Beach , and the Salinas Beach itself. Salinas houses the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum , in whose surroundings is the monument to Philippe Cousteau , the work of Vicente Menéndez-Santarúa Prendes . It is an important summer leisure center on the Asturian coast.
Its history dates back to the Roman presence in the nearby castro de Raíces , rebuilt in medieval times by Alfonso III, then called Gauzón Castle. History tells that in this castle the Victory Cross was made , heraldic emblem of the Principality of Asturias that today is kept in the Cathedral of Oviedo .
In July 2005 , archaeological excavations were started for its recovery, and it now houses a museum on local history, together with the interpretation center of the Castillo de Gauzón , located in Raíces Nuevo .
The development of Salinas is closely linked to the establishment and activity of the Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas , currently called Asturiana de Zinc, and as well as the Real Club Náutico . The latter arose at the initiative of several families from Oviedo and Madrid who traditionally spent their vacations in Salinas. Its first corporate headquarters was a wooden building built throughout 1916 . The location has been maintained despite the years that have passed since Manuel Álvarez-Buylla inaugurated that building. In 2005, the construction of the third building that houses this institution began.
Also noteworthy are the Raíces Viejo schools, built with the contributions of Indians.
Salinas has lost its old market (located at the entrance of Salinas) after the demolition of the building for the construction by the city council of new social housing (VPO) for young people. However, local businesses stand out.
Salinas is one of the main beaches on the Cantabrian coast for surfing , surfing-kayaking , bodyboarding and windsurfing . Every summer is celebrated Salinas Longboard International Festival of Surf , where local surfers collaborate with other surfers and bodyboarders from the national and international scene. During the summer there are also more surf festivals such as Surf, Music and FriendsLike the previous one, it brings together a large number of national and international surfers, in addition to numerous concerts accompanied by food trucks. Finally, Salinas also celebrates Songs for an EWAN day , a three-day festival with numerous indie / indie-rock concerts, various food trucks and a spectacular atmosphere.
It also has several bars, restaurants, cider houses and picnic areas ; Most of them a few meters from the beach located on its promenade , which is a pleasant walk, both in summer and winter. On this walk there is one of the municipal bicycle collection points similar to those that can be found in Piedras Blancas or Avilés .
Salinas has four parks where the little ones can play: The recently created Deva park is the most visited by families and has good facilities. The Raíces river continues its course parallel to the park towards the Avilés estuary. Another one, located near the beach and known as "Los Patos" for having a pond where ducks used to live, has a bar and a fountain but no children's play area. The third is the Piñole park, which has a bus stop and is located on the street of the same name. Finally, on Calle Ramón y Cajal, next to the nursery school and the old schools, there is another small park for recreation.
Salinas is connected to Avilés and Piedras Blancas by bus line L-1 ( La Luz-Piedras Blancas ). The Alsa company also makes stops in Salinas on various routes, including Madrid and La Coruña . In addition, it has a stop on the Feve Ferrol-Gijón line complemented by the Feve suburban service between Gijón or Oviedo and Cudillero.
It is one of the few towns in which a third of the neighbors form an association with its own entity and personality. They publish their annual magazine, distribute preñaos buns and wine, and organize some social activity.
