Artesia is a town of 12,000 in the New Mexico oil patch. There is an active refinery at the edge of town and a thriving downtown. The Land of the Sun theatre is the only theatre in town and sits right on Main Street. Although the building appears to be fired brick, the theatre front is covered with white paneling to reflect the neon lights of the sign. The marquee is still in place and the neon is ready to fire up. The Land of the Sun opened on August 15, 1947. It originally had a single screen but in an effort to update it, AMC split it into two theatres.
