"The Texas Hot Dogs Story... Texas Hot Dogs has been owned and operated in my family for three generations. My grandfather Peter George opened the first Texas Hot Dogs in 1918. While he was “Pete” to his friends, he was originally born in the Greek town of Nea Korini, where his original name was Peter Koufougeorgas. When he immigrated to America, he and his family eventually settled in Altoona, Pennsylvania, although he originally opened his business in DuBois with his brother Frank. A few years later, Peter George moved the business to downtown area of Altoona, PA. Texas Hot Dogs is known for its unique chili sauce, developed by Peter George and still made the same way today. It’s our core topping on our regulars’ hot dogs, where an “everything” includes brown mustard, chili sauce, and freshly chopped onions. The sauce is also a customer favorite on our fries and macaroni orders. For 100 years and counting, George’s ideas of fresh ingredients and value for your dollar have made us a hometown favorite for an easy lunch or dinner with family and friends. After Peter George passed away, his two sons Anthony D. George and George P. George (my uncles), operated the business. My mother, Niai, worked the family business along with her brothers. George later moved on and opened his own store in Pinecroft, Pennsylvania. Anthony continued to operate the downtown store and later in the 1960s, he expanded to a location on Goods Lane and 58th Street by the Logan Valley Mall. In 1974, my parents, Daniel & Niai Lamont purchased the downtown and 58thStreet restaurants from their brother-in-law Anthony. Over the years, my brother and I took over the businesses. In August 2018, my brother sold the downtown location. Today, the 58thStreet location is the last family-owned and operated location. We hope to continue to serve our community quality food and service for many years to come!–Anthony Lamont, Proprietor of the 58thSt. Texas Hot Dogs in Altoona, PA" (from listed website)
