In Rovinj, at the pier, there is a stone monument that also serves as a bench with an interestingly formed darker stone on the top of it. The inscription pn the lower part made of marble explains in two different languages (Croatian and Italian):
Na ovom mjestu nakon barbarskog
mucenja umoren je od nacifašista
10/10/1943
Buckovic Anton
Qui fu barbaramente seviziato
e trucidato dai nazifascisti
The Croatian text above and the Italian text below the date and the name means in English "at this place after barbaric torture he was murdered by the Nazis".
A date of the monument can not be found, but as it is an required date, we use 1/1/1900 instead.
"[...] Anton Buckovic was a fighter of the 1st Partisan Battalion of the 1st Istrian Brigade "Vladimir Gortan", wounded on September 30, 1943 near Vodnjan. NOP activists transferred him to a hospital in Rovinj for treatment, but the Germans discovered him and hung him in the square. [...]
It is interesting that the monument was made by the Dubrovnik sculptor, one of the most important in the former state, Marijan Kockovic (1923-1991), who is also the author of the fountain located on the Square."
