"A new 1.1-mile Family Fitness Trail has just opened for public use at Jefferson Barracks Park in South St. Louis County with major financial support provided by the St. Louis County Parks Foundation. Designed for outdoor exercise and active play the entire family can enjoy together, the trail features four separate children’s play stations plus a variety of adult exercise equipment, benches and new landscaping linked by the existing South Dennis Schick Loop Trail. The St. Louis County Parks Foundation raised more than $100,000 to complete the project with additional support provided by the Friends of Jefferson Barracks and the St. Louis County Parks Department.
"This is the second Family Fitness Trail to be funded by the Foundation. The first trail was completed and opened in Spanish Lake County Park in August 2018 and has proven to be popular with park visitors. A third trail is now being planned by the Foundation in Creve Coeur Lake Park.
'“Trails were identified as the top priority for new investment in the County’s parks by residents surveyed in the Vision 2030 Master Plan recently completed by St. Louis County Parks Department,” said Mark Ohlendorf, president of the St. Louis County Parks Foundation. “We believe these new family trails can benefit the most people because they are designed to encourage multi-generational use. Children can lead their adult and other playmates from station to station and keep the entire family moving for an hour or more.”
'“We would like to thank Cardinals Care, Friends of Jefferson Barracks and the many individual donors for helping make this new idea possible,” Ohlendorf added.
"The St. Louis County Parks Foundation works with the St. Louis County Parks Department to identify the park system’s needs and opportunities, and then coordinates the fundraising, purchasing and project oversight necessary to build new amenities that will improve these parks. The Foundation’s first project was the installation of the large fountain at Tilles Park in 2015. More than $110,000 has been committed to date from five private foundations to help fund upcoming park projects." ~ St. Louis Post-Dispatch by Craig Workman Dec 9, 2019
