The family of Sander and Lea Bartels consisted of the children Jozef (Joop), Levie and Ro and Lea's mother, Rosina Cohen-Levie. Lea ran a shop for ladies' hats in the Weerstraat, Sander was a sales representative. All family members are in hiding. Grandma Rosina had gone into hiding in Utrecht but was betrayed by her neighbor from Tiel. Her granddaughter Ro was in the same house but managed to escape by hiding in a closet.
The eldest son, Joop Bartels, was an office clerk. He had been called up for placement in the Wittebrink labor camp in Hummelo. He tried to escape the Nazis by fleeing, but was still arrested at the French-Swiss border
