Text on the Stolpersteine:
HIER WOONDE
RIKA VAN DER HORST
GEB. 1877
GEDEPORTEERD 1942
WESTERBORK
VERMOORD 27.11.1942
AUSCHWITZ
Rika van der Horst had lived with her mother and mentally retarded sister for years. They had already died before the war. Rika led a secluded life and earned a living by visiting the farmers in the Tiel area with a pull cart with draperies. The Tiel chief of police J.S. de Jong refused to cooperate in a raid on 17 November 1942. He resigned and warned the Jewish community. As a result, fifteen people were not deported; five of them survived the war. Rika van der Horst could not or did not want to go into hiding. Ten days after she was arrested by Tiel police officers, she was murdered in Auschwitz. She was the first Jewish victim from Tiel.
