The Sooner Schooner made its first appearance on the football field in 1964 in a game against USC. Donated that year by Dr. Don Bartlett and his brother Charlie, the Sooner Schooner (a scaled-down Conestoga covered wagon) became an official mascot of the OU Sooners in 1980. Pulled by two white ponies (Boomer and Sooner) the Sooner Schooner has appeared at very nearly every home and bowl game since - most notoriously at the 1985 Orange Bowl, when the Schooner mistakenly entered the field during play and drew a penalty. This, the original Sooner Schooner, is on permanent display here in the Memorial Student Union.
