L'Abbé Léon Provancher
Scientifique émérite, entomologiste de réputation mondiale et grand spécialiste des hyménoptères (ordre d'insectes comprenant les abeilles, guêpes et fourmis), l'abbé Léon Provancher apporta une contribution considérable aux sciences naturelles. Il a laissé de nombreux ouvrages qui eurent une influence marquante, comme Flore canadienne et Petite faune entomologique du Canada. En 1868, il fonda par ailleurs la revue Le naturaliste canadien. Travailleur acharné, Provancher constitua plusieurs collections entomologiques, dont l'une, regroupant des spécimens uniques au monde, possède une valeur patrimoniale exceptionnelle.
An accomplished scientist, world renowned entomologist, and leading expert on Hymenoptera (an order of insects including bees, wasps, and ants), Abbé Léon Provancher left a rich legacy of contributions to natural science. He was the author of many works of far-reaching influence, including Flore canadienne and Petite faune entomologique du Canada. In 1868 he founded the magazine Le naturaliste canadien. A tireless worker, Provancher built up several entomological collections, one of which has outstanding heritage value because it includes specimens not found anywhere else in the world.
