Schoenberg Hall on the campus of UCLA houses the school’s music programs. It contains an auditorium with over 500 seats, classrooms, practice rooms, a music library and a recording studio. Brand new in 1955, the “contemporary” building was a little over ten years old when it appeared in the original series episode called “Operation -- Annihilate!” Apparently, the producers of Star Trek thought the building was futuristic enough to have existed on the planet Deneva in stardate 3287.2.
In the episode, a landing party materializes in the capital city of Deneva. Kirk motions with his hand that his brother’s lab is over there. The scene then switches to a still photo of this building (the photo is reversed). The outside scenes on Deneva were actually shot at the Northrop-Grumman facility in Redondo Beach, CA and we are led to believe that this building is in proximity to that complex, but it is not.
The building is shown for only a second or so and is easy to miss. I wonder if any UCLA music students are aware that their building is on another planet!
