"Located in a natural cove, sheltered by a spit of land known as “La Llera”, on the right bank of the mouth of the Negro River, is the port of Luarca, one of the main fishing ports in Asturias. Since ancient times, the economic activity of the Asturian town of Luarca was based on maritime activity and its fishing fleet was one of the most important in whale fishing. Today, the Luarca fishing pier is one of the town's main tourist attractions and in its vicinity we can find the Giant Squid Interpretation Center, which houses 31 specimens of this species."

A curious fact is that 30 vessels that catch octopus in campaigns that take place from December to July. The ports of origin of these ships are located in western Asturias. This artisanal fleet fishes the octopus using traps, a fishing art that consists of a trap that captures the octopus remaining static at a point on the seabed with a bait inside. And the octopus may carry the MSC blue label on the market.
