"The port of Avilés is located on both banks of the Avilés estuary, in Asturias. It is bathed by the Cantabrian Sea and has several docks for berthing boats of different drafts, among which the San Agustín Dock, the Roots Dock and the San Juan de Nieva Dock are the most extensive.
The amount of goods loaded here grows year after year, but the enormous quantities of aluminum for the Alcoa factory (formerly Inespal), of steel and scrap for the Arcelor Mittal factory and of zinc for the Asturiana factory are of special interest. of Zinc, belonging to Xstrata, that land here every year. It is also the most important fishing port in the entire region, surpassing El Musel de Gijón in unloaded catches.
Likewise, the Avilés Port Authority also controls the uses of the Avilés marina, which is attached to the fishing dock, more specifically in the part closest to the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Center."
