At the end of the 19th century, the small Romanesque temple of Sabugo, the old fishing district of Avilés, had become too small to accommodate all its parishioners. The entire city mobilized to build a new temple that would be a symbol of the progress that Avilés was experiencing at that time: the City Council, the local bourgeoisie, even the Avilés emigrants in Cuba did not hesitate to contribute their money and their effort to make the project come true. Symphonic organ Thanks to the contribution of individuals, companies and foundations, since 2010 the church has had a symphonic organ by the constructor Federico Acitores, the second largest in Asturias, after the Basilica of Covadonga. Lignum Crucis Since in 1953 he received, through the intercession of Bishop Lauzurica, a fragment of the relic of Lignum Crucis that is kept in the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana (Cantabria), it has become the treasure and symbol of the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad and Santa Vera Cruz, which has venerated the Virgin since ancient times in her dedication to Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. The wood chip will be displayed in a chestnut wood niche, the work of the cabinetmaker, Paco Cueva.
