Monument to remember the night of 16 to 17 June 1944, when the Germans shot down a Halifax bomber carrying seven Canadians over Alphen. They died as a result.

On 16 June 1944 at 2236 pm, the Halifax Mk Ill MZ297 WL-Z of RCAF
434 squadron took off from RAF Croft in England. The plane was part of a
wave of 321 aircrafts to participate in a raid on the German oil refinery in Sterkrade/Holten.
On the way back, the Halifax was attacked north of Den Bosch at 1:54 am
by a German Messerschmitt Bf 110 G4 of the Stab IV/NIGI Nachtjagd-
geschwader flown by pilot H. Schnautfer, radio operator F. Rumpelhardt and
air gunner W. Gansler.
Eventually the burning Halifax crashed lose to this location in Alphen aan
den Rijn on the Herenweg (now Oude Herenweq). All seven crew members
lost their lives and they are buried in the Commonwealth War Graves section of the general cemetery in Oud Leusden.
