The Works Progress Administration, which operated in the 1930s and the early 1940s, was one of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal programs designed to put the myriad unemployed to work. Besides planting 24 million trees and laying 9000 miles of storm drain (and adding the word boondoggle to the national lexicon) the WPA produced over 400 new post offices during its lifetime. One of these was the Art-Deco/Neo-Classical post office building in Florence, Colorado.

The Roosevelt administration also sought to employ artists, usually to adorn the WPA projects with ornamentation. For the post office buildings, this usually took the form of murals in the lobby. Artist/illustrator Olive Rush was hired to produce the mural in the Florence post office. Her large painting of a herd of pronghorns lining up to take a drink is named ‘Antelope.’ (Technically, a pronghorn is not an antelope, but who’s keeping track?)

In 2019, the USPS issued a set of five postage stamps depicting depression-era post office murals. One of these was ‘Antelope’ from the Florence office. In addition to having its lobby mural on a postage stamp, the Florence post office itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
