Canari

Canari, with 313 permanent inhabitants (in 2020), covers 1667 hectares (16.7 km²).
The name Kanelate (ancestor of Canari) is found on the maps of Ptolemy, a Greek geographer of the 2nd century AD. The pieve of Canari (administrative unit at the time of the Pisans) depended on the bishopric of Saint Florent. The church of Santa Maria Assunta, in Romanesque style, dates from the 12th century.

From 1300 to 1768, Canari, like the rest of the communes of Cap Corse, experienced an eventful history. Its territory, property of Genoese nobles, Italians and Corsicans, underwent several campaigns of destruction.

In the 19th century, due to a strong increase in the population, agriculture developed with the cultivation of citron, vine and olive trees. The cultivation of linen, transformed into sheets, represents an important craft activity. Livestock breeding is strictly regulated so as not to interfere with cereal crops (wheat, oats, barley, lupine). Fishing is a supplementary activity which contributes to the diversification of the productions.

Asbestos, which will be, during nearly 20 years, the great industrial wealth of the village, is discovered in 1898. The beginning of exploitation was short-lived in 1929 and then it was relaunched in 1939.

The Canari asbestos factory reached its peak in 1961 with nearly 30,000 tons extracted and processed by 300 workers and employees. On June 12, 1965, the factory closed its doors for good, a victim of competition from Canadian asbestos. The site was stabilized and secured.
In October 2008, the municipality inaugurated the Conservatoire du Cap which presents two permanent exhibitions, one dedicated to traditional costume and the other to old photography.

Finally, since 2003, Canari has hosted the annual International Festival of Lyric Singing with its Master Classes and its international competition.

Today, the town of Canari has stabilized its population and has fifteen students (2020) enrolled in primary school. With its permanent and seasonal businesses, an encouraging tourist development, and an improved road network, Canari is betting on a diversified attractiveness to prosper during this 21st century.
