Canari Mine
The Canari asbestos deposit was discovered in 1926, and the mine was exploited industrially from 1948 onwards, but in very poor hygienic and unhealthy conditions, which were concealed for decades and were later denounced, in view of the illnesses that struck the miners. From 1949 to 1965, this mine, nicknamed "the white hell" by the miners, was operated by a subsidiary of Eternit. The asbestos factory closed its doors for good on June 12, 1965. The plant produced up to 28,000 tons of ore per day in the 1960s.
