[FR] L'église Saint-Symphorien de Fondettes remonte au XIIème siècle. L'apparence actuelle est le fruit des modifications apportées aux XIII et XVèmes siècles.
L'édifice est composé d'une nef de trois travées fermées à l'Est par un chœur et une abside, et dispose de deux chapelles. Une première chapelle est dédiée à la Sainte-Vierge, et comprend trois verrières exécutées par le grand verrier tourangeau Léopold Lobin en 1867, ainsi que des vitraux représentant Sainte-Barbe, Saint-Vincent et Saint-Symphorien, patron de la paroisse. L’autre chapelle est dédiée à Saint-Jean-Baptiste, et est ornée de peintures de Grandin datant de 1863.
L'église Saint-Symphorien dispose d'un clocher-tour surmontée par une flèche dont la couverture est composée d'ardoises. A sa base, huit lucarnes ont été aménagées en 1881, pour servir d’abat-son. Le clocher abrite deux cloches. La première a été refondue en 1818, grâce à une souscription parmi les habitants ; elle est placée sous l’invocation de saint Symphorien. La seconde, baptisée Laure Andrée Jeanne Marie, a été refondue en 1939. Le clocher date du XIIème siècle, fut rénové entièrement en 1879, puis l’a été à nouveau en 1990 en même temps que la totalité de la toiture.
La façade ouest de l'église est pourvue d'un portail d'entrée élevé à la fin du XVème siècle pour remplacer l’ancienne façade du XIIIème siècle. Le portail comprend de nombreuses sculptures en bas relief remarquables : une rosace de pierre sculptée, deux arcs surbaissés de la porte, une niche restaurée en 1863 et comprenant une statue de sainte Barbe, signée Buré. En haut du portail, dans l’angle nord, une pierre sculptée porte les traces d’un écu, détérioré sans doute à la Révolution, et qui portait des armes seigneuriales. Faisant pendant, dans l’angle sud, une sculpture en saillie représente une barque de Loire : elle témoigne de l’invocation fréquente des saints de l’église paroissiale par les travailleurs et les riverains du fleuve, pour se protéger de ses dangers ou de ses colères. Les travaux de restauration de 1990 ont permis de restituer les têtes des pinacles, ainsi que de reprendre quelques sculptures de la façade à la manière des originaux. Deux verrières placées symétriquement à gauche et à droite du portail éclairent les collatéraux de l’église.
L'église Saint-Symphorien est inscrite aux Monuments Historiques en 1995.

[EN] The Saint-Symphorien church in Fondettes dates back to the 12th century. The current appearance is the result of modifications made in the 13th and 15th centuries.
The building is composed of a nave of three bays closed to the east by a choir and an apse, and has two chapels. A first chapel is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and includes three stained glass windows executed by the great Touraine glassmaker Léopold Lobin in 1867, as well as stained glass windows representing Sainte-Barbe, Saint-Vincent and Saint-Symphorien, patron of the parish. The other chapel is dedicated to Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and is adorned with paintings by Grandin dating from 1863.
The Saint-Symphorien church has a bell tower surmounted by an arrow whose roof is made of slate. At its base, eight skylights were fitted out in 1881, to serve as a sound barrier. The bell tower houses two bells. The first was recast in 1818, thanks to a subscription among the inhabitants; it is placed under the invocation of Saint Symphorian. The second, called Laure Andrée Jeanne Marie, was rebuilt in 1939. The bell tower dates from the 12th century, was completely renovated in 1879, then was again in 1990 at the same time as the entire roof.
The west facade of the church has an entrance portal raised at the end of the 15th century to replace the old facade of the 13th century. The portal includes many remarkable bas-relief sculptures: a sculpted stone rose window, two low arches of the door, a niche restored in 1863 and including a statue of Saint Barbara, signed Buré. At the top of the portal, in the northern corner, a carved stone bears the traces of a shield, undoubtedly deteriorated during the Revolution, and which bore stately arms. As a pendant, in the southern corner, a projecting sculpture represents a Loire boat: it testifies to the frequent invocation of the saints of the parish church by workers and residents of the river, to protect themselves from its dangers or from his anger. The restoration work of 1990 made it possible to restore the heads of the pinnacles, as well as to resume some sculptures of the facade in the style of the originals. Two windows placed symmetrically to the left and right of the portal illuminate the aisles of the church.
The Saint-Symphorien church was listed as a Historic Monument in 1995.
