Russell is in Costilla County, Colorado and is 1 of three Ghost towns named after William Greenberry Russell. At the western foot of La Veta Pass Russell discovered a alluvian rich in gold, Russell and his party registered claims and a small town sprang up and it was called Russell. William Russell was part Cherokee and his wife was full blooded Cherokee. Russell once again left Colorado choosing to abandone his claims in Costilla County, instead of allowing his wife to return to the reservation alone. Russell and his wife move to indian territory (present day Oklahoma), where William Russell died in 1877.
The ghost town of russell is a small cluster of buildings alongside Highway 160 near a dirt turn out and a CDOT garage.
