Perched at the top of Saint-Florent, the citadel is one of the highlights of a visit to the town. The building, built in the middle of the 15th century, is impressive. The fortress was the residence of the governor of Nebbio.

Citadel of Saint-Florent

Built during the 15th century, after the foundation of the city in 1440, the citadel of Saint-Florent has continuously been evolving. Composed of a high primitive tower with its cistern, a lower surrounding wall, built in the 16th century with two turrests and a square tower, the building had originally artillery terraces.

It witnessed history shakeups such as the siege from December 1553 to February 1554, when people suffered from starvation.

From 1824 to 1939, the building became a garrison shelter. Acquired by the city in 1986 and listed historical monument in 1994, the citadel welcomes artistic exhibitions every summer since then.
