Near Nidaros Cathedral stands this obelisk erected for the merchant Thomas Angell. On the obelisk, which was erected in 1895, there is a bust of Thomas Angell. The following inscription can be read on the obelisk: "The town of Trondhjem erected this memorial to its benefactor".
Thomas Angell (born December 29, 1692, died September 19, 1767) was born in Trondheim and was a child in a wealthy family. The family had earned a fortune on grocery shopping and mining.
As an adult, Thomas Angell was trained as a theologian, but along with his brother, he was hired by the family business to carry it on. However, it ended in family strife and Thomas Angell bequeathed his entire fortune to the city's poor. A home for orphans and a home for elderly poor citizens were created. The foundation still exists and you can apply for an amount every year.
